Hamburg Street Art

This Facebook photo album collects the graffiti/stencil/sticker/street art we saw in Hamburg.

Hamburg record shopping

Recently we made a little citytrip to Hamburg and people who follow me on Facebook or Instagram will probably know already that Germany's second city is record store heaven.

Ok, Berlin, London and New York probably have more shops but the good thing about Hamburg is that almost all of them are located in the same neighborhoods, namely in Schanzenviertel and Karolienenviertel, located right next to each other. It's only 2-3 km to walk from one end to the other of both these neighborhoods.

On saturday morning we started at the Schanzen flea market, where I immediately grabbed a couple of goodies :-)

Schanzen flea market

Yep, Mandré's debut lp and Sly & Robbie's 'Rhythm Killers' and a bunch of others (prices varied as some people were obviously professional sellers).

One of the best shops in town must be GROOVE CITY (Marktstrasse 114). Great stock of old and new jazz, funk, soul, Brazilian, disco, hip-hop and much more, plus a bookshop specialized in graphic design. They also publish a flyer that lists all the record stores in Hamburg (this one: http://www.hamburg-record-stores.de). Found Wiley's 'Playtime Is Over' here. Great place!

On the same day we went to RUFF TRADE RECORDS (Feldstrasse 48) where I was happy to find Rae & Christian's fantastic debut lp... and some other stuff ;-) Old and new vinyl, well organized, good prices - unless you want the original rock/funk/jazz pressings from yesteryear. Again, a great shop to dig in the crates!

One shop that really emptied my wallet (nearly) was REKORD (Schulterblatt 84), which has an exceptional stock of house, techno, hip-hop, trip-hop, soul, funk, latin and jazz. Attica Blues' hard to find second lp, Kirk Degiorgio's first album, found it here. And many more for that matter. Staff told me about more vinyl hidden in the basement which can be browsed online. I haven't dared to look yet...

Books, cd's, dvd's and LOADS of vinyl are to be found at ZARDOZ (Schulterblatt 36). Everything is very well organized and it's almost impossible to leave without buying something. Here also old and new vinyl at reasonable prices.

At this point it was getting hard to remember what I bought where! ;-D

By far the craziest shop must be FREIHEIT UND ROOSEN (Paul Roosen Strasse 41). They really try (well, do they really?) to keep everything organised but stock is so vast, it's... well, a crazy place. A lot of 90s electronica (from big beat to jungle), hip-hop, funk, soul, jazz, rock,... anything really. And if your fingers haven't collected dust after visiting all the other stores in Hamburg, they will here. In other words: a must-visit! :-)

PLATTENRILLE (Grindelhof 29) apparently has a bit of a legendary status and I can understand why. It's a beautiful shop, hidden away at the back of a house and the stock is huge. Classical music, classic rock and jazz mainly. Prices are considerable but democratic, which I expected. Although I DID leave with a Prince 12" :-)

Think that was it? Think again! Here's an overview of the other shops visited or passed by at closing time. You will find the addresses on the website I posted above.

2012 in music

Although this list is far from complete (no singles, no digital releases for obvious reasons) it does give an overview of what I "consumed" in 2012 - and a very good year it was! Roughly sorted by genre here, a complete list will follow shortly.
